How Shared Community Solar Works
Shared community solar is an innovative way for businesses to access clean, renewable energy without installing solar panels on their own property. By participating in a shared solar program, businesses can benefit from the power of solar energy while enjoying cost savings on their utility bills. At Rebewables Worldwide, we connect small businesses with community solar farms in MA and throughout the Northeast. While there are many benefits to community solar, people unfamiliar with the process are unclear about how it actually works.
If you’re looking into community solar in MA, it’s crucial to understand how it works. Let us explain the process and benefits.
Energy Allocated to Off-Takers
In a shared community solar program, a solar facility (or solar farm) generates clean energy, which is then allocated to various customers, also known as “off-takers.” These off-takers typically include businesses that don’t have the space or resources to set up their solar installations but still want to participate in the benefits of solar energy. Through a customer agreement, the solar facility offers these businesses solar credits based on the energy produced by the farm.
Measuring Energy Output
Energy output is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and National Grid, the utility provider, credits the off-takers’ account based on the amount of energy allocated to them. This credit is applied at the “all-in rate,” which includes costs for delivery, supply, and transmission. These credits are typically reflected as an adjustment or credit on the off-takers’ monthly utility bill, lowering their overall energy costs.
Benefits for Your Business
But it gets even better for the businesses involved. While National Grid credits the off-taker’s account, the solar facility developer invoices the off-taker for 90% of the total credit amount via ACH (Automated Clearing House). The off-taker keeps the remaining 10%, which is the business’s savings from participating in the program.
